Jainism is a very old and ascetic religion whose roots run as deep as Buddhism's into Indian ancient history. Historical Sites One of the more historically significant sites in Palakkad is Palakkad Fort. It was built in 1766 by Hyder Ali, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore spanning parts of southern India. It fell to the British in 1784, was captured by Zamorin troops and then retaken by the British in 1790. The fort is also sometimes called Tipu's Fort, named after Hyder Ali's son Tipu Sultan. The structure is located in the middle of Palakkad town and is quite well-preserved. Natural Sites The Palakkad district boasts the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, which has an area of 285 square kilometers. The sanctuary is home to diverse indigenous flora and fauna. Visitors can acquire permission to hike through the area and witness elephants, guar, sambar and even a few tigers in their natural habitat. Travel to the sanctuary is approximately 135 km from town. Some boating facilities are situated on the lake and these are available for use to visitors. Much nearer, only 80 km from Palakkad town is the Silent Valley National Park. It is a rain forest that is named so for its strange silence due to an absence of cicadas. The park is home to some indigenous people and is a reservation for tigers as well. Prominent Institutions The Integrated Rural Technology Center (IRTC) is located in Mundur, Palakkad. This establishment engages in research, development and training focused on rural development. Its projects revolve around certain fields that fit the rural setting and benefit its residents.
