Overdose trends becoming a serious cause for concern

Drugs and alcohol have become major contributors to problems for millions of people worldwide. Overdose trends have become extremely common in many societies around the world and, as a result, are breaking people and families apart. According to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), there has been a major increase in illicit drug use in the United States alone, rising to the highest level in 8 years. Reports also indicated that in 2009, 8.7 percent of Americans who were aged 12 and older said they has used illicit drugs at least or more than once in the month prior to the survey conducted. The total number of illicit drug users equaled to an estimated 21.8 million people. This means that the United States alone witnessed a 9 percent increase in the overall percentage of illicit drug use over the 2008 rate. Overdose trends can also be blamed for the rapid change in modern lifestyle and the desire to be accepted by peers.

Alcohol addiction is also extremely popular in almost every corner of the world. Since alcohol is more easily accessible than drugs, more people are turning to alcohol to give them a high and this is becoming a major issue. In the United States, young people use alcohol more than they do tobacco or any other illicit drug. Excessive consumption of liquor is also directly associated with approximately 75,000 deaths every year in the country. Study has also shown that in the European Union, more than 23 million of 490 million people are dependent on alcohol, contributing to nearly one in ten of all cases of illness and premature deaths each year.

To control alcohol addiction in the United States, a new introduction has been made. Wet Houses, or in other terms, houses for homeless or hopeless alcoholics have been set up in various cities including Seattle, Minnesota and the capital, Washington among several other cities. The introduction of Wet Houses has created a lot of controversy although a section of society believes they will benefit alcoholics. Wet Houses are places where homeless and hopeless alcoholics can sit down and drink in a safe environment.

However, it cannot be said that such an innovation will help decrease the problem of alcohol abuse and the number of alcoholics in the country.
