OxyContin is a narcotic pain reliever that is similar to morphine. OxyContin is known to provide relief for moderate to severe pain for a period of up to 12 hours. OxyContin is an agonist opioid, making it an effective pain reliever and creating a feeling of ease in a patient suffering from chronic pain. It is different from acetaminophen or aspirin as it is known to provide four times the relief than either of the mentioned drugs. This makes it highly popular among people suffering from severe pain for various reasons.
However, OxyContin addiction is very common and is fast becoming a major issue. This prescription drug is being abused by many users and thus, contributes to a rise in the number of drug users or addicts. OxyContin can be a habit-forming prescription drug and it is extremely important that it is only used for the purpose it is made, which is to relieve chronic pain.
If teamed with alcohol, the results can be lethal and can cause highly dangerous side effects and in many cases, even death. OxyContin should also never be taken in excess and for durations longer than prescribed by your doctor. OxyContin addiction could lead to impairment in your ability to think properly and reactions.
Lately, there has been more or less what one can call an OxyContin epidemic, what with increasing reports of its abuse. In a fact sheet of an Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), it has been indicated that an estimated 1.6 million Americans used prescription-type pain relievers for reasons that were non-medical for the first time in 1998. The situation worsened with ONDCP reports indicating that the number of OxyContin emergency cases saw a massive increase of close to 36 percent in a single year with numbers changing from 3,369 in January to June 1999 to a rise of 5,261 in January to June 2000.
The OxyContin epidemic has made life very difficult for many households. Since it is such an addictive drug, it is highly important to consult a doctor before using the drug to relieve you from chronic pain. Handling dosage of the drug on your own if you suffer from pain is not recommended as professional medical advice and opinion is always required.
