Maxi dresses have constantly reinvented itself since it first made its comeback a couple of years ago, and its malleable nature has ensured its longevity. Maxi dresses works completely with so many of this years key themes, like the 70s, midi and maxi hemlines and bold citrus shades. Incorporate your pick of spring and summers hottest trends with your maxi style to instantly give your maxi dress a new lease of life.
The silhouette for 2011 has a new aesthetic that is rather more fragile and romantic. Lace is a key fabric and looks fabulous in a maxi style. While lace is striking when worn from top to bottom, you could alternatively opt for maxi dresses that incorporate lace detailing, or for maxi dresses that feature a lace bodice or skirt only. Classic black is a strong look, but if you want to keep on trend then opt for nude shades of lace in peaches and faded pinks.
Delicate fabrics are really big this year, with sheer fabrics making a real statement on the runways. While the fashion houses primarily showcased sheer maxi dresses, other notable sheer must haves were sheer floor length skirts. If you are a little too self conscious to bare all in a sheer maxi then there are more reserved options on the high street. If you are more reserved, look for fabrics with a hint of sheer and stick to black fabrics too. Or mix and match and contrast sheer layers with opaque, say by throwing a tight sweater over your sheer maxi.
Pleating is one trend for the season that lends itself to a whole range of styles, including the maxi dress. You do not have to look for a maxi style with a longline pleat skirt, as pleat detailing can be incorporated around waistbands, in panelling, or across the bodice. Look out for the large range of pleat choices for you to choose from, for a more slimming shape go for a smaller delicate pleat. You should choose a material that you know will retain their crisp pleats. The ballet, pleat and maxi trends can be assimilated into a maxi dress cut with a long pleated tutu. As well as being bang on trend this dress shape gives the longline, free flowing, feminine frame that so inspires this years spring and summer collections.
Tying in with the new, romantic feminine figure that the designers are so in thrall to this year the shades of choice are pales and feminine nudes. Pale nudes are key as they inform the majority of the 2011 trends for the year including the emphasis on femininity, soft edges, romanticism and ballet. Look for maxis in nudes and pales to create a Grecian look that will see you well into the autumn.
