The coastal state of Orissa has a varied and fascinating history represented by the famous Sun temple at Konark and the revered Jagannath temple at Puri. Home to sixty-two tribes, the state also boasts of many wild life sanctuaries with habitatas including the graceful white tiger.Traditionally, Orissa descended from the historical kingdom of Kalinga. The script for the Oriya language derives from the Kalinga script which is one of the descendants of the Brahmi script. The state's odissi dance, and exquisite handicrafts give it a unique and favorable identity. Orissa travel in order to explore the fascinating tourist attractions of the state. It is also the ninth largest state in terms of area. Modern day Orissa was established on 1st April, 1936 as a state and this date is celebrated as Utkal Day or Orissa Day. Bhubaneshwar is the capital and the largest city of Orissa. The modern name of the state is derived from the Sanskrit word Odra Vishaya or Odra desa. Odra refers to the native people of Orissa. Odra people are also mentioned in various ancient literatures; most prominent among them is the epic Mahabharata. Orissa was inhabited since a very early age and there are paintings which prove the existence of human civilization in the pre-historic era. Mostly of Proto Australoid stock, many of the Orissa tribes are high land tribes with rich ethnological character and customs, varying language and dialects. The territory conscious different tribes have long been able to reject the mainland influence and have preserved their social customs, living style and theological values.

A core area of 145 square kms has been carved out of the sanctuary to form Bhitarkanika National Park. On the coast of Bay of Bengal on the sprawling beach of 35 kms lies the world heritage site of Gahirmatha Beach which is the nesting ground of the Olive Ridley Sea - Turtles.
Jagannath Temple Puri: The land of Lord Jagannath, meaning 'Lord of Universe', is one of the most sacred pilgrimage spots in India. Protected by two surrounding walls, the conical tower of the temple is 58 mts high on which the flag and the wheel of Lord Vishnu can be seen.
Chilka Lake: Just south of Puri, the sea mixes in with the 1100 sq.km inland Chilika Lake to create the largest brackish water lake in Asia. These shallow waters enclose an immense area of marshes, lowlands, and islands. There are more than 160 varieties of fish and famous for migratory birds as well.

Air: There is a airport in the heart of the city of Bhubaneswar with flights operated by all the major public and private airlines.
Rail: There are regular trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
Bus: Orissa is well connected to its neighbouring states through a good road network.
