CD:

The compact disk (CD) audio system was released in 1983. The compact disk (CD) can store the audio information of one hour in the digital form on one side and it is a non-erasable disk.CD-ROM is non erasable disk which has the capacity of storing 650 MB of memory so it can be used for sharing huge data.CD-R is a CD recordable in which the user can write to the disk only once.It can be treated as write one-ready many.CD-RW is a CD rewritable in which the user can remove and rewrite to the disk many number of times. To burn or write data to a CD, we must have a CD-RW drive called CD Burner.

DVD:

This part of the article explains about what is a DVD, what are different forms of a DVD such as DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW and differences between them.
DVD is a high capacity version of the CD-ROM but similar in size as of CD-ROM.We can say that DVD actually took the video into digital age.

A DVD is a digital video disk which is used for producing digitized, compressed form of information and one DVD can store information on 25 CD-ROMs approximately. Also the picture delivered with a DVD is very impressive.

There are:

(a) Single sided, single layered discs with storage capacity of 4.7 GB
(b) Single sided, two layer discs with capacity 8.5 GB and
(c) Double sided, two layer discs with capacity of 17 GB.

All DVD drives can read any CD. But a DVD-ROM drives can only read DVDs but cannot read and write the data to other DVDs.
The R format discs like DVD+R or DVD-R can only be written once, and cannot be erased for ever. While RW format discs like DVD-RW or DVD+RW can be written to and erased multiple times.

DVD-R and DVR-RW were developed by Pioneer and used by Apple. These can be written only in one layer on the surface of the disk. DVD+R and DVR+RW were supported by companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Dell etc. These can be written to in many layers.
Generally DVD-R, DVD-RW are cheaper and have low disc storage capacity than DVD+R, DVD+RW.
