There are many opportunities for online Hebrew lessons on the web and choosing the right one may be daunting. There are also some misconceptions about learning a second language such as Hebrew online.
The chief fiction that must be clearly understood is thinking that learning any new language online will always be the best way to go. The best way to learn a language is by face to face contact with people who actually speak and live that language every day. There is a big difference between classroom Hebrew and Hebrew that is actually used in day to day life. Someone who speaks, thinks, lives, and breathes Hebrew every day can easily tell if they are speaking with a classroom student of Hebrew – whether learned online or in a classroom. Some online courses have attempted to address this by offering live and interactive learning using certified Israeli instructors in their curriculums. This is a good thing, but is also only a partial solution simply because you just can’t beat face to face, nose to nose contact.
And one can only spend so much time with an online instructor. Extra time to understand concepts may be needed, but this extra time can be expensive.
So, although there are clearly many advantages to learning Hebrew online, the absolute best way to learn any language is by personal tutorship and face to face contact with someone who lives and breathes that language.
But this is not always possible, or even practical.
Having said all this, there are some very attractive facts concerning online Hebrew lessons. One of these was just mentioned above regarding live online instructors. Though not the same as direct face to face contact, it is the next best thing. Students can see facial expressions, hand movements, and all of the subtleties that may be associated with a word or phrase.
Learning online is generally more convenient than classroom learning or even private tutorship. Students can log in anytime they choose to get their lesson. An exception to this may be the availability of live online instructors. Students do not have to travel to a place that holds classes. Everything can be done in the comfort of one’s own home.
Both tutorship and learning Hebrew from a college or university can be extremely expensive. Online courses are generally far less expensive though one has to watch for hidden fees.
Learning at one’s own pace is one of the chief advantages of online Hebrew lessons. The truth is that everybody has their own pace and optimal way of learning. Not only can students select the style of an online course that works the best for them, but can generally login at their own choosing. There are also more structured courses available from accredited schools that have attendance requirements should this style of learning be needed or desired.
The more that a student understands the pluses and minuses and all of the options available of online Hebrew lessons, the better the chance of finding a course that suits his or her needs.
