And two economists have projected on alternative theory: height. “We argue that a simple preference for a taller husband (or shorter wife) can explain part of the gender-specific asymmetries across ethnic groups in the propensity to out marry.
Blacks are taller and even height allotment is closer to whites. Because they are taller, black men have better prospects on the white wedding market than Asian men. But this is reverse for women. Women cost significantly better on the white marriage market than black women.

The paper focuses on British data, but considers American nuptial patterns as well. In their conclusion, the authors say their findings have implications for immigration and competition for mates: These results also point out a previously unrecognized implication of large immigration flows: they can potentially alter the sex ratio on the marriage market and in turn the bargaining power of the two gender even if their gender composition is roughly balanced.
Just for example, a large inflow of East Asian immigrants to the UK or the US will effectively increase the marriage market opportunities, and the bargaining power, of white men comparatively to white women, even if the invasion is balanced with respect to genders. Social norms or relaxation of laws against interethnic marriages may completely increase the relative bargaining power of one gender in comparison to the other. It would be worthwhile to investigate what are the implications in terms of household behavior and distribution of resources within the household.
