We think of Santa, Christmas presents, family gatherings, and the birth of Christ, Savior of the world when we think of the holiday season. Sometimes, we put our priorities in the order listed above as this time of the year can become so hectic, with planning events and buying gifts. Shopping alone can take up so much time. Santa, gift exchanges, family gatherings, and finally, Christ are the highlights of this festive time. This season, families might want to keep in mind where some of the traditions of our holiday seasons come from as the shopping for gifts begins, separating facts from fiction, and devoting the day, the month, the season, the entire year to the Lord who died so that we might live. He is still giving us the ultimate gift - eternity.
At this special time, while many traditions we now celebrate began before the birth of Christ having their foundation in Pagan solstice and sun god worship, one can find the roots of Christmas stockings in Saint Nicholas, or our modern day Santa Clause. A fourth century bishop of Myra, Asia Minor, Saint Nicholas had a reputation of kindness and generosity. Giving away treats and small gifts he was noted as especially kind to children. Creating magic to make children's dreams come true, if they are good enough, Saint Nicholas has evolved into the magical Santa Clause that we now herald as a miracle worker. He leaves a stocking for Christmas on the bedside of the kids who find wonderful gifts of their desire on the next morning.
From the folklore surrounding stockings by the fireplace one can find the part of Saint Nicholas's evolution. It is said that in the home of a widower who lived in Myra, first Christmas stockings were found. He could not properly support his three daughters, and was unable to provide a dowry. The story goes that into the fireplace chimney, Saint Nicholas threw three bags of gold and drying by the fire, the gold landed into the stockings. This began putting Christmas presents into Christmas stockings tradition which is now very famous, especially among kids.
Our holiday celebrations are surrounded by many more traditions and rituals and through hundreds of years, these practices have been handed down, evolving to meet the needs and beliefs of the culture of the day. With the wise men Christmas presents are usually associated, but an even deeper history runs regarding gift exchanges. To allow the communities that worshipped false gods co-exists with the communities of Christ, many of the practices were adapted to Christianity. Thus Christmas stockings have become a popular custom that is followed religiously.
