It is a known fact that in today’s world, there is a very high level of competition for attaining anything. Be it food, shelter, or even the most basic needs like water. While majorities of people work hard to compete, there are bunches of cutthroats always looking out to take that short-cut or easy way to get to something. These are the people that often resort to crime as well as the law terms them as Criminals. As criminals are constantly being brought to justice by rigorous punishment, there remain certain questions that are unanswered, the main one being whether or not a criminal has learnt his lesson. There are ample chances of a criminal resorting to committing heinous crimes again. This is where the Offender Assessment System comes into the picture. The system majorly used in England and Wales, was founded in 2002. Its primary focus is to understand criminal mentality.
The Offender Assessment System (OASys), analyzes criminal behavior like chances of re-offending, identifying as well as assessing the reason behind the crime committed, identifying the criminals weak points as well as strong points etc. Apart from this, the OASys also conducts behavioral/psychological tests, to understand the character of the criminal, and also constantly measures the changes occurring in the behavior of the criminal during the period of imprisonment. Clinical evaluations are made on computer-based forms by staff of offenders. Sentence as well as supervision plans are also undertaken periodically. The typical period being 16 weeks for offenders in the community and a little less frequently for imprisoned offenders.
Risk of self-harm is also another major aspect on which the OASys concentrates. The chance of a criminal harming himself, committing suicide, as well as causing disturbance by harming other individuals comes under this part of assessment. The criminals are then given a grade, which will influence their sentences. Grades come under the category of ‘low’, ’medium’ and ’high’ where low means the criminal has the least chance of repeating crime, and is given a lighter sentence whereas medium and high level grades usually involve harsh sessions and rigorous imprisonment.
A system carefully set up to track behavior patterns and dedicated to eradication of criminal offences, and at the same time taking utmost care of prisoners by making sure they are delivered with proper sentences they deserve, the offender management and assessment system is an efficient and orderly system that all countries must adapt.
