Nursing school admissions requirements continue to become more stringent as this profession continues becoming more competitive. As the demand for qualified nurses increases, more and more people are trying to enter this high-paying career that has excellent benefits and job outlook. However, not only do you have to be caring, hardworking and intelligent to get into nursing school and finish the program, but you also need to fulfill a series of specific qualifications before your nurse training can even begin.
The Requirements to Get into Nursing School
Every nursing program is different, and it will likely have some unique requirements that differentiate from other programs. The more prestigious and popular programs typically have the strictest requirements, as you might assume. Most nursing programs require students to at least pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills, or TEAS, which will prove that you have a basic understanding of English, math and science so that you will be ready for the courses you’ll be taking. It is also fairly common for nursing schools to require the completion and passing of the Health Education Systems Exam, or HESI, which covers basic health and medical subjects that most high school graduates should already have some understanding of. Some colleges also require the National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Exam.
If you are still in high school and planning on beginning nursing school shortly after you complete your diploma, there are a few things that you can do to ensure a successful application and acceptance into a good school. The Board of Registered Nursing recommends taking four years of high school English, three to four years of high school math, two to four years of high school science and three to four years of high school social studies. At least two years of a foreign language is also helpful, although it is not required.
If you are already out of high school, you can still make up for missed courses by taking classes at a community college. In fact, many nursing students finish an associate’s degree at a community college before transferring into an accredited nursing school program, which covers all of these as well as some basic nursing courses. Most nursing schools require SAT or ACT scores to apply, but if you complete the associate’s degree first, you may not need to have completed either of these tests. You will, however, need to have a clean criminal record, proof of immunizations and vaccinations and CPR certification.
