Many different types of nursing jobs in the government offer new and experienced nurses with opportunities to learn, grow, expand their horizons and earn good pay with benefits. The government operates many of its own healthcare facilities for various government employees and also operates clinics for low income citizens. There are nursing jobs with the military as well, both overseas and domestically. Some are civilian jobs, and some require military enlistment. The large variety of government nursing jobs provides an opportunity for many different types of nurses to move their careers forward.
Indian Health Service
One of the most interesting and educational types of government nursing jobs is with the Indian Health Service. Nurses that work for the Indian Health Service work with Native American patients on reservations, providing the opportunity to learn about a new culture and work with a wide range of illnesses and injuries among all ages of their population. Nurses must be prepared to do all the varied tasks required of them as an IHS nurse and able to think on their feet when unexpected situations arise.
Military Nursing Jobs
There are many different nursing job opportunities with all branches of the military. Nurses can be found on every military base and on the front lines, serving current members of the military at home and abroad. Nurses may also be employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. These hard-working VA nurses care for the generations of military veterans that have served our country at rehabilitation facilities, long-term assisted living centers and veteran’s hospitals. Some nurses are even hired to provide in-home care for veterans.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
One of the most exciting and challenging places for skilled and experienced nurses is at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is commonly referred to as the CDC. These government jobs are reserved for the most specialized and clinically experienced nurses, unlike some of the other government jobs that are open to brand new nurses. Nursing jobs with the CDC may involve assisting researchers, administrative duties and offering health education to employees and patients.
The National Institutes of Health
Nurses with clinical research experience can find great career opportunities with the National Institutes of Health. Responsibilities may include assisting the researchers, collecting and recording data, monitoring patients and discussing their progress.
Salaries will vary depending on the level of experience you have, location and job type that you choose. But, rest assured, there are many nursing jobs in the government that are available.
