We have written so many articles on elder abuse that we are blue in the face. We have covered all the alarming statistics, all the warning signs to look out for, covered the various types of elder abuse, such as financial, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, how to spot a predator, etc. You can find those articles on our website elitelawyerproject.com/blog and we’ll keep writing them. All of these facts, stats and tips have not been able to heal each of our personal and horrible experiences with elder abuse. That being said, our writing staff has decided to share a few personal stories with our readers in honor of our loved ones in hopes that a least one person will stand up and take action to help a senior suffering from nursing home abuse or elder abuse at home. If you suspect any form of abuse, contact a nursing home abuse lawyer who will launch an immediate investigation and put a stop to the crime.
One staff member we will refer to as “Bradley” received a call from the nursing home that his mother had fallen and was on her way to the hospital and that he should meet them there. Bradley had spent the late afternoon into evening, a total of 5 hours, waiting with his mother to be put into bed. He had tracked down nurses and staff on 6 occasions with promises someone would be right there. She had recently had surgery and he did not feel qualified to make the move from her wheelchair to bed. He eventually had to leave. Upon receiving the call to go to the hospital, Bradley decided to stop by the nursing home first and talk to the director. He knew she had fallen trying to get herself into bed, and he was furious. Upon arriving, once again they told him his mother was on the way to the hospital. As he was waiting to talk to the director, he decided to gather a few of his mother’s items to take with him. When he walked around the corner to her room, he found her lying on the floor in a pool of blood after hitting her head. Her body was contorted making it difficult for her to breath and her airway could have been easily “unobstructed”. Her pelvis was fractured, etc. and she did not survive. She had been at the nursing home for less than a week and was simply there to recover from a simple surgery. The person responsible for getting her to bed left crying saying she had had to put 63 seniors to bed by herself that shift.
Another staff member we will call “Kelly”, went to visit her grandmother in a nursing home. She was located on a very busy hallway right by the desk. She walked in in horror to find her grandmother heavily sedated and laying naked for all to see on top of her bed covers. Her grandmother was an extremely alert senior with good mental clarity. Her bed clothes were neatly folded in her drawer across the room. Kelly got her out of there, and had blood tests done. She was near death due to a sedation overdose. Her grandmother had been afraid to report the abuses for fear of retribution. Not until she was out of the facility was she comfortable in telling her story of humiliation, neglect and physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her caregivers. Nothing can erase the guilt that the family feels over her nursing home abuse and neglect. They have very serious regrets about not having contacted a nursing home abuse lawyer when some concerns starting crossing their minds.
A third staff member “Lucy” walked into the lunch room of a nursing home to visit a grandparent, only to find him being choked and kicked by other residents at the facility. Staff members had not seen Lucy and were standing nearby and watching. A similar story was reported by CBS News about a senior that was choked and suffered a broken neck and broken wrist all because an angry CNA was mad because she had wet the bed. A congressional report states that 1600, or close to one third of all nursing homes, have been cited for elder abuse.
We hope that these stories will prompt you to take action. We know there are also excellent nursing home providers out there and we sincerely appreciate the extra efforts you take. If you suspect elder abuse or nursing home abuse, immediately contact an experienced nursing home abuse lawyer who will take immediate action to protect your loved one.
