Choosing a first car is never easy, especially if you’re a student and tight for cash. Finding something that’s cheap to buy is only part of the problem – a car’s not much of a bargain if it’s constantly breaking down, or goes through a lot of fuel.
Choosing a first car is never easy, especially if you’re a student and tight for cash. Finding something that’s cheap to buy is only part of the problem – a car’s not much of a bargain if it’s constantly breaking down, or goes through a lot of fuel.

One good choice is the Vauxhall Corsa. OK, it might not be the head-turner that an Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro is, but it’s a neat, functional car that will look after you. There are a few different versions to choose from, but the three-cylinder 1.0 litre and four-cylinder 1.2 litre petrol-engined models are particularly worth a look because of their great fuel economy. The fact that the new models have high depreciation rates also works to your advantage if you’re in the second-hand market, as it means that you can get some great deals. At Northern Ireland used cars recently there was a 1.0-litre example with just over 46 ,000 miles on the clock for £2,999. Bearing in mind that this is a car that will deliver something around 50 miles to the gallon, it’s stands to prove that you can find a decent car without taking a massive hit to your bank balance.

Insurance is inexpensive for these cars as well, and with so many of them on the road, servicing and parts are both easily handled. Not that that should be too much of a problem, hopefully, as one major fleet group reported that the Corsa had one of the best reliability records of all the models that it used.
