Among all the phones under Nokia's belt, what is the most unique handset in its roster? It certainly isn't the Symbian Belle-powered 701. So which phone is it? The most unique smartphone in the Finnish phone manufacturer's list of phones is the Nokia N9. Why is this? It is currently the only smartphone that is powered by the MeeGo operating system. It might just be the first and last of its kind.
This unique OS is a Linux-based platform that was formerly being developed by Intel and the Finnish firm. It was formally introduced on February of 2010 at the Mobile World Congress. At the time, it offered countless possibilities for mobile devices. Both the consumer and tech enthusiasts were eagerly awaiting Nokia-made products running the platform.
Months have passed after the official announcement of the operating system. However, no products have been launched running the OS. More than a year later in June of this year, we finally got word of a device that ran MeeGo. Despite the announcement, it was a bitter sweet moment for the handset. Prior to the announcement, the Finland-based firm signed billion dollar deal with Microsoft. They will now be focused on creating Windows Phone handsets. This meant that they would no longer be supporting other MeeGo-powered devices.
The Nokia N9 is not only unique due to its OS. It is also one of a kind due to its design. It comes with a curved 3.9 inch AMOLED display and no buttons could be found on the phone's face. It offered a purely touch interface. Aside from its beautiful and minimalist design, it offered unsurpassed performance compared to other Nokia-made handsets. Coupled with its MeeGo platform, it comes packed with a 1 GHz single-core processor under the hood. It offered beauty and power in a 12.1 mm thin package.
Is the Nokia N9 both the first and last of its kind? It certainly looks that way. Since the Finnish phone manufacturer has abandoned the platform, Intel was forced to search for other interested parties. According to reports, they have found another candidate. This is the Korean technology giant Samsung. Both industry leaders are reportedly working on the Tizen operating system.
There is no doubt that this smartphone is the first and last of its kind. It's ironic that this platform offered countless possibilities in mobile computing. At least you will get to experience the platform's prowess with the Nokia N9. So, don't miss your chance. This may very well be the most unique handset in the planet.
