Nokia has finally unveiled the long awaited Nokia N9 at the Nokia connection event in Singapore this week. The first MeeGo based smartphone - N9 has been in the news since the MWC 2008 and is a product of the joint venture by Intel and Nokia.
Though much of the hardware configuration hasn't changed since 2009, the only major overhaul is the processor configuration. The N9 comes with a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, an integrated PowerVR SGX530 GPU based on the TI OMAP 3630 chipset. The other notable changes are 1GB of RAM, the SoC and the Linux-based OS.
The Nokia N9 is built with a polycarbonate shell, sports a 3.9-inch AMOLED Gorilla Glass capacitive multi-touch screen (480x854 pixel resolution).
The Nokia N9 is expected to ship in two versions namely 16GB and 64GB. The other key specifications include: an 8MP wide-angle autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash, support for 720p HD video recording, Micro SIM slots supporting quad-band GSM and penta-band WCDMA networks. Meanwhile the connectivity options include: 3G (HSDPA 14.4Mbps/HSUPA 5.7Mbps), Bluetooth v2.1, GPS (with A-GPS), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, TV out, USB-on-the-Go, as well as NFC.
This Nokia Mobile Phone comes with a dimension of 12.1mm at its thickest part of the body and a mere 7.6mm at its edges. It weighs 135 grams and available in three variants like black, cyan and magenta. It is powered by a 1450mAh battery which is rated to deliver about 11 hours of talk time, 380 hours of standby time, and up to 50 hours.
Running on the MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan OS, the N9 includes support for QT4.7, HTML5 apps, as well as OpenGL ES 2.0 and Webkit2-based browser. The array of bundled apps include: document editor and PDF viewer, Ovi Maps, Angry Birds Magic, Galaxy on Fire 2, Real Golf 2011, Facebook and Twitter.
The interface seems to be simplified with the complete swipe navigation and only three types of home screen views: apps, open apps and events. Although it is heartening to see a whole bundle of feature-rich apps on a promising MeeGo platform, there is still no word about its price and release date.
