The kitchen is the heart of your home. How do you make it look the part?
You may think it's time to renovate your kitchen but where do you start? With planning, of course. With a proper kitchen plan you can have a room to suit all your needs.
First think about your kitchen. What do you do there? Of course, you cook and wash dishes. But for many of us, the kitchen is where we eat and socialize. So the kitchen should reflect our personalities.
What do you like about your kitchen? What don't you like about your kitchen? Is the furniture in the style you prefer? Are the appliances, countertops and cabinets adequate for your needs? Is the flooring in good shape? Make a list of what you would like to improve in your kitchen. This can be your dream list that you can tackle as time and funds allow.
Now go through the various home improvement websites and magazines for ideas. Make note of styles, prices, manufactures and instructions. When you've decided what you want in your kitchen, watch for costs. Can you afford to do that project now or should you wait and save a little first? Also, do you have the know-how to do the project yourself? This can save you big bucks, but you must have the time and ability to do it.
While you are figuring out what you want, be sure to ask for opinions, especially from those who live with you. While you are not bound by their advice, they may be able to point out factors you did not see. They may also have suggestions that you never considered. It is especially important to consider your spouse's views. After all, you both have to live with the results.
There are so many different choices to make in a kitchen renovation project, it is easy to get stuck in the decision-making stage. How will you know if you choose the right project? In all honesty, you won't until you make up your mind and get started. So what if you chose the wrong shade of paint? You may find after a time you will get used to the new color and even prefer it.
In any kitchen renovation, as with any home project, make sure the project reflects your style: If you are not the country type, don't paint your kitchen barn red. If Southwest décor seems too bleak for you, don't stencil cacti on your walls. On the other hand, if you treasure your great-grandmother's cast-iron fry pan, make it a focal point of your décor: Hang it on a wall or display it on a shelf.
By carefully planning out your kitchen renovation, you will end up with a beautiful, useful room that truly reflects you. A great kitchen starts with a great plan
