If you’re saving, shopping for clothes is definitely not what you want to do. You can either break down, go to the mall and refresh your wardrobe with a bunch of new clothes, or you can approach your closet with scissors, a sewing kit and the fierceness and artistic eye.
Shopping is a lot of fun, and especially when you’re shopping for clothes, shoes and accessories. You browse online stores or go to the mall and try on everything you like, take a handful of garments to the register and a moment later you leave with a bag full of new clothes. You get home, unpack them and look in your closet to see what you can mix and match. Like I said, it’s a lot of fun, but what if you’d rather have fun on the slopes this winter, or are saving money for a month in Rome, for a new car or for school tuition to raise your qualifications? If you’re saving, shopping for clothes is definitely not what you want to do, but without new items your closet becomes dull and boring and you feel like stuck in Catch 22.

If that’s the case, you could break down, go to the mall and refresh your wardrobe with a bunch of new clothes, or you could keep your eye on the prize and approach your closet with scissors, a sewing kit and the fierceness and artistic eye of couture designers. Don’t worry, you’re not supposed to shred all your clothes and see what happens, you’re just meant to reinvent your closet at the lowest costs possible.

Start off by taking everything out as you’ll need to do a serious selection. Everything that is considered classic, all items that are of very good quality, vintage or a necessity in your business attire selection will make up a pile for later, all that remains is your playground, so to speak. These are the clothes you can use your imagination on and start cutting off sleeves, sewing on lace trim or dyeing a different color. The idea is to add variety to your wardrobe, so don’t be afraid to experiment and cut out a new neckline in a top, sew in stretch panels in a dress or make a mini and a scarf out of a long skirt. And if something goes wrong, you don’t have to worry because these are the clothes you deemed worse in the first place, so you can toss them and move on to the next garment.

When it comes to your saved up pile of goods, you may want to treat them in a bit more conservative way, but you can still make some updates. Change buttons on your jacket to more funky ones, add an easily removable ribbon trim to your skirt, think of making some fabric broaches that will cheer up a classic black dress and try new ways of wearing things. If you cuff elegant slacks and put them on with high heels and a belted colorful cardigan, they will be perfect to run out with friends, grab a pita bread sandwich and go dancing, yet you’ll still be able to wear them to the boardroom; change black tights to colorful ones and add some cheerful jewelry and you’re ready to go from court to date; and a white shirt is perfect for office, spa or friends’ housewarming party, depending what you match it with, so step outside of your clothing box and get creative, so you’ll look fabulous skiing, in Italy or driving your new car.
