Seniors in need of assisted living don't have to move into a care facility that looks and feels like a hospital. Options range but a residential care facility looks and feels like a regular home while providing the assistance that a senior needs. Here's a look.

The number of elderly living in America continues to grow, a trend that has a growing need for assisted living in the present and will continue well into the future. Residential care homes continue to grow in number and popularity. They offer a real break from conventional assisted living facilities, which often look and feel like a hospital. People will call them adult foster homes, senior care homes, group homes, among other terms. The nomenclature will range, but the goal is the same. Residential care homes and the like provide assisted living to seniors in a house-like setting, giving it a feel like family.
Senior residential homes offer a real break from the institutional settings that define many assisted living facilities. Still, the need for care is real for many seniors, and a residential care center offers the ideal balance of comfort and personal assistance. The staff at a senior home helps with medication, bathing, dressing, and just about anything else you can think of. The basic nature of a senior residential care home sometimes means a very focused brand of care. If a parent, spouse, or a loved struggles with a chronic health problem, you may want to consider a specialty care house. Focuses will vary and may cover chronic conditions like diabetes, kidney and dialysis, Alzheimer’s, among others. You can even find residential care homes where the staff understands and speaks your native language. This will range among care homes and geography, but it is common to hear Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese and many other languages spoken at residential care facilities.
Senior care homes help create an uplifting environment for the senior residents, which means an opportunity to interact among peers, have fun, and even develop new skills late in life. Activities range but residents often board games, fold clothes, bake cookies, and assist with the evening’s meal. And, many residential care facilities will include transportation, which may include visits to your physician, running errands, or fun excursions like a trip to a senior center or the mall. If you have a dog or cat or other furry friend, some care homes may even allow you to keep your pet with you at the care facility.
A residential care home will typically issue monthly charges. This typically covers three meals per day, utilities, housekeeping, laundry, activities, and possibly transportation around town and beyond. This will depend on a variety of factors, with a prospective resident’s health often a key factor. The owner or manager of the residential care facility will make an assessment of everything and provide you with a cost quote before admission.
