They come in different variations and the appropriate type to use will depend on the structure and topology of your network, protocol and size. In some cases, a network will utilize only one type of cable, while others require a variety. The twisted pair, coaxial, Ethernet cross over, and fiber optic are the most common cables.

Twisted pair cables
Twisted pair cabling comes in two varieties: shielded and unshielded. Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is the most popular and has four pair of twisted wires that are housed inside the lining of the cable. The quality of UTP may vary from telephone-grade wire to extremely high-speed cable; the tighter the twisting, the higher the supported transmission rate and the greater the cost per foot. Although UTP cable is the least expensive cable, it may be susceptible to radio and electrical frequency interference, so if you intend to use the cable in an environment with lots of potential interference, the alternative shielded twisted pair (STP) may be the solution. The STP can also help to extend the maximum distance of the cables.

Coaxial cables
Although coaxial cabling is difficult to install, it is highly resistant to signal interference and can support greater cable lengths between network devices than twisted pair cable. They come in two types: thinnet and thicknet, referring to their size.

Ethernet crossover cables
These can be used to directly connect two network devices through Ethernet; either single computers or networks. They are usually used on a temporary basis in the absence of a network router, switch or hub. Ethernet crossover cables enable complex data transfers between computers, routers and networks and unlike standard Ethernet cables, the internal wiring of Ethernet crossover cables reverses the incoming and outgoing signals.
