Our modern lifestyle tends to be extremely hard on the human body. Every day sees huge amounts of toxins enter our systems from environmental pollution and unhealthy, over processed foodstuffs. The body’s natural cleansing procedures are not enough to cope with this influx of pollutants and without detoxification, over time, large amounts of unhealthy contaminants get built up in key areas such as the gut and colon.
Stress and an unhealthy lifestyle affect the colon

Stress and an unhealthy lifestyle and diet can also directly affect the colon. The colon is basically an involuntary muscle (one that moves without our conscious control) located at the end of the digestive system. As the food moves through the colon, the last remaining nutrients as well as the excess water is removed from the mix until the waste that remains moves into the rectum as stool. However, when the colon’s muscle contractions are slowed down due to whatever reason, it can end up absorbing too much of water. As a result, the stools end up too hard and dry; making them difficult to expel from the body.

Without the timely application of constipation remedies, this can cause serious problems including hemorrhoids; anal fissures (tearing of the skin around the anus) and rectal bleeding; even rectal prolapse, a condition where a part of the intestinal lining is pushed out from the anal opening.

Many a times, the hard stools also end up packed tightly in rectum and the intestinal area, causing blockages in the gut and even stopping further bowel movement. This waste build up can result in the poisons and harmful bacteria (that breed in such conditions) to be reabsorbed into the body leading to Septicemia.

Fortunately, there are several gentle herbal constipation remedies that can cleanse the colon and prevent such extreme consequences. Start by increasing your fiber intake. A well-balanced, high-fiber diet that includes foodstuffs such as whole grains, bran, and fresh fruits and vegetates will help the digestive system work more efficiently.

You can also try such herbal remedies such as ginger and garlic tea for more immediate relief. Add about four to five medium sized cloves of garlic to four cups of water and boil it. Once the tincture is boiling, add a teaspoon of grated ginger; cover; and let the mixture simmer for 15-20 minutes. Finally, strain the tea and add the juice of a lemon.

Other constipation remedies include drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration and adding some form of physical activity to your regular routine.
