Causes of Vaginal Discharge

1. Trichomonas (trich, trichomoniasis) is infection by a single-celled parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis. The infection is transmitted by sexual contact.
2. Gonorrhea is the sexually-transmitted disease (STD) resulting from infection by the bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Symptoms of Vaginal Discharge
The most common symptoms of gynecologic disorders include vaginal itching, a vaginal discharge, abnormal bleeding from the vagina, pain in the pelvic area, and breast pain and lumps (see Breast Disorders).
The significance of gynecologic symptoms often depends on the age of the woman because symptoms may be related to the hormonal changes that occur with aging.
Treatment of Vaginal Discharge
Infections are treated with antibiotics. Often just one dose of antibiotics by mouthis enough.
Alternatively, you may use vaginal cream forms of antibiotics, especially if you have significant side effects from taking antibiotics by mouth.
Also, the vaginal cream can be more soothing for the inflamed, sore vaginal lining. If you are diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis, you may be prescribed an antibiotic called metronidazole (Flagyl).
If your doctor suspects you have a sexually transmitted disease based on your history and physical exam, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics administered by injection and by mouth in the office before the tests results can confirm the diagnosis.
