If you like a good mystery, living in Phoenix or Scottsdale real estate might be a great fit for you. The region is home to many mysteries related bookstores and Arizona’s longest running dinner-mystery theater. The area also features prominently in many mystery books and movies.
The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale is a world-renowned bookstore devoted to, as the name obviously implies, mystery books. It often attracts famous writers such as Sarah Paretsky for book signings. The Poisoned Pen hosts seven book club discussions including the Coffee & Crime Club and the Hardboiled Crime Club.
Arizona’s longest running mystery dinner theatre club, The Mystery Dinner Theater at Coco’s Bakery & Restaurant located in Phoenix. Current productions include Murder at Bedside Manor, Murder at Greystone Manor, Murder at Magic Manor, and the hilarious Killer Karaoke. Besides the award-winning Tony Hillerman mystery series set in the Southwest, other mystery books set in or around the region include several cozys or Agatha Christie style mysteries.
- In the popular Cupcake Bakery Mystery series, Melanie Cooper is the owner of the Fairy Tale Cupcake Bakery in Scottsdale. Her books feature many familiar streets and landmarks.
- Renee B. Horowitz’s Pharmacy Sleuth trilogy is also set in Scottsdale. Her protagonist Ruthie manages the pharmacy at a supermarket in Scottsdale, Arizona.
- Garrison Allen’s Big Mike series, former Marine and current mystery-bookstore owner Penelope Warren and her cat, Mycroft or big Mike, solve mysteries in a pleasant Arizona desert town.
Nearby Phoenix has its share of fictional sleuths including Deb Baker’s A Dolls to Die For series. In her series, three generations of Birch women view collecting dolls and solving murders as a family pastime.
If you are interested in writing your own thriller or cozy, Scottsdale is home to many mystery writing groups, including Southwest Crime Link and Arizona's Desert Sleuths which holds monthly meetings and an annual conference. They are a Sisters in Crime chapter part of a national organization dedicated to the advancement of women authors in the mystery field.
The movie based on Waiting to Exhale by Terry McMillan features authentic locations such as the Biltmore Hotel and the upcoming Ostrich Festival celebrating its 23 anniversary March 11- March 13th. The World famous festival celebrates the area's rich and unusual heritage in Ostrich ranching. Other well-known books that feature the Scottsdale region include the huge bestseller Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer, a native of Phoenix. In the first book of the series, Bella leaves Phoenix to live with her father in Forks, Washington.
