Fish oil, which is derived from the tissues of oily fish is recommended for a healthy diet for the prevention of diseases. Obtained from the tissues of oily fish, fish oil is recommended for a healthy diet because it is rich in the omega-3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are precursors to eicosanoids that help reduce inflammation in all parts of the body.
According to some experts, consuming fish oil in any form can aid in the regulating of cholesterol level in the body. Benefits of fish oil also include a positive impact on body composition. Recent surveys indicate that fish oil may help reduce depression. Some scientists point out that fish oil exerts neuroprotective action in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease as well. A study from Melbourne's Orygen Research Centre indicates that fish oil could also help delay or prevent the onset of schizophrenia. According to the American Heart Association, patients with coronary heart disease should consume 1g of fish oil daily. Some other health conditions for which fish oil is highly recommended include hypertriglyceridemia, secondary cardiovascular disease prevention and high blood pressure.
In recent years, many people have resorted to fish oil supplements in order to get adequate omega-3 fatty acids. In early 2006, fish oil supplements had come under scrutiny when PCB levels in several fish oil brands reportedly exceeded the stringent new European maximum limits. With the inception of the International Fish Oil Standards program patented production purification processes have been introduced to remove pollutants and dioxins from fish oil to levels.
Fishes however, do not produce omega-3 fatty acids on their own, but accumulate these acids by either feeding on microalgae that produce them or by consuming prey fish that have accumulated omega-3 fatty acids from microalgae. However, certain predatory fish species like albacore tuna, though high in omega-3 fatty acids, accumulate high levels of toxic substances such as mercury, dioxin and PCBs, due to which the FDA recommends restricted consumption of these fishes.
Fish oil production declined in all main producing countries barring Iceland in 2005. Fish oil production estimate in the five main exporting countries (Peru, Denmark, Chile, Iceland and Norway) in 2005 was about 570000 tonnes, a 12% downslide from the 650000 tonnes produced in 2004.
In Peru, the world's largest fish oil producer, fish oil production declined from 350000 tonnes in 2004 to 290000 tonnes in 2005. However, despite the slump in production, the increase in fish oil prices allowed Peru to earn 156 million US$ from fish oil exports in 2005.
