My 8 best of New York City

This is my guide to the best sights of New York City. I travelled here in April 2010, unexpectedly due to the ash cloud I was stranded for an extra 9 days, so as you can imagine I got to see a lot and some stuff not worth visiting.
1. The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York harbour. She was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Standing 151 feet above sea level, take the 354 step narrow winding staircase inside the statue to marvel at its architecture. Has to be done but the queues are off-putting!
2. Central Park sits on 843 acres of city owned land and receives approximately twenty-five million visitors annually. For animal-lovers, Central Park is home to the world famous Central Park Zoo and Wildlife Centre and the Children's Zoo. Two skating rinks, a carousel, a public swimming pool, baseball fields, tennis courts and other sport attractions are scattered throughout the park. My favourite has to be taking a rowboat out on Central Park Lake where you totally forget you are in the city of New York.
3. Fifth Avenue between 49th Street and 60th Street is lined with prestigious shops and is consistently ranked among the most expensive shopping streets in the world. I know it’s not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ but to see this lavish street is gobsmacking. I went to New York lately with my girlfriend and was at first dragged on a Sex and the city tour, but in fact I could not recommend it more as the perfect tour of New York.
4. Top of the Rock the best observation deck in New York, although it is 50/50 between that and the Empire State Building. I visited both and I have to say the ‘rock’ was my favourite. There was nostalgia at the empire state but the views on top of the Rockafeller are more panoramic and simply breath-taking in the night.
5. Museum Avenue is the ideal place to take in some culture, running along the side of Central Park it is a very glamorous area. Visit New Yorks Guggenheim museum which is an amazing sight both inside and out, or visit one of the many art galleries such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many more. I definitely recommend a visit to this area, take a few hours wandering and find hidden gems.
6. Nights Out The best of New Yorks entertainment lies in its comedy and Jazz clubs. New York City is the "hub" of the Jazz World. All the greats made their names here, and young up-and-comers flock to the city for the chance to prove themselves. Comedy clubs are plentiful and it is said if a comedian cracks New York they are destined for greatness.
7. Times Square has to be seen to be believed. A statement of intent from the Americans, it is an area where bigger is definitely better. A great place for adults and kids especially the infamous Toys R Us. I would recommend however that people eat on the side streets because the prices are high but the quality of food is low. Besides this just let go and have fun, it will bring the child out in you.
8. Broadway Wow, the home of theatre, just amazing. If you don’t catch a show in New York then you have missed out. While I was there I became addicted and saw three shows, if I lived there I’d make it my business to see them all. Get cheap tickets on the day or behind the bleachers on Times Square.
