If you pack yourself, you will need to give yourself enough time to do this before you are picked up.
If you pack yourself, you will need to give yourself enough time to do this before you are picked up. Perhaps even give yourself three or more months. Drivers when moving house are on a schedule and they don’t like to wait for someone to finish packing just one more box. Besides they may have another move after they finish with your household.

Once you decide on the mover for moving house, ask them the price of their boxes. They should have a price list available. Also on the list will be any specialty boxes that they have in stock and their prices. You can get boxes from the grocery store but they are usually not very sturdy or clean and they may have cockroaches living in them. Also, some house removals companies take back the used boxes after they unpack a customer. They may even have some of those for sale at a cheaper price. If you are unable to pick up the boxes you buy from them ask if they will deliver them to you as a service because you are using their moving company.

You also need to determine how many boxes you will actually need because you do not want to have any left over boxes because boxes are not cheap, especially the specialty boxes. You may be surprised at how many boxes you will actually need when you pack yourself. When you walk through your rooms deciding what you are actually going to have moved, also think about where you are going to set those boxes and packing paper or other packing materials. You want them at hand but you don’t want to be moving the piles of empty boxes around as you move through the house.
If will be enough work moving around the packed boxes.

You will be surprised just how much time it really takes to pack your own household goods. When the moving house personnel do it for you they have a dedicated crew just packing up your stuff. And the reality word here is dedicated.

When you do your own packing you will not be doing it in isolation. You may also work or be a home maker. If so you still have a household to run. That includes cooking, cleaning, and taking care of other people. This means answering the telephone or using the computer. It also means being easily interrupted by just about anyone and anything. After a period of hours or days of packing boxes you will welcome interruptions. So this all means it will take you much longer to pack up your household than the movers would take.

A part of packing your own things is that as you pack you will be subconsciously making decisions as to where it will go in the new home or perhaps whether you really want to pack it. As the days of packing go by you may find you discard more and more, so plan on giving yourself adequate time to pack.
