Model cars have maintained great demand ever since they came to exist. The growth of market of these cars expanded more ever since the end of the Second World War.
A model car can also be called a toy car, as it is a miniature replica of the automobile. Trucks etc. are also put in this category of model cars. What started as mere and humble playthings soon became a collector’s hobby. In 1960s where lies the beginning of this hobby, a lot has changed over the past so many years in terms of precision, detailing and making of these model cars for the collectors. The Norev is one such example of a model car, it is a miniature of the actual Renault 4CV.

Miniature models of automobiles were first seen as slush cast plaster or iron toys made in the early years of the 1900s. Then, in the 1930s and 1940s the tin and pressed steel cars, trucks, and military vehicles came into the picture. It is observed that the demand of these miniatures escalated rapidly following the end of the World War II in 1945. Casting vehicles in various alloys, mainly zinc (called zamac or mazac), also started during the war years and went on strongly even after World War II. At the same time, market of the model vehicles spread rapidly in various parts of the United States of America and Europe as well.

Post war, the zinc alloy vehicles gained even more popularity in Europe. While diecast models were seen in America they were often simple, plastics also seeped in and became quiet prominent. During the 1950s and 1960s, tin and pressed steel came to Japan and they quickly moved into diecast by the 1970s. Today, China, and other countries of Southeast Asia are the main players of diecast model cars. The scales of toy and model cars vary a great deal due to historical precedent and market demand.

After the war these models cars were manufactured as far simpler toys in smaller scales. For example the Dinky Toys (often 1:64 or 1:43), whose manufacture began in 1934, or the much talked about the Match boxcars (often approx. 1:64), of the mid-'50s. The early die-cast model cars had no opening parts. Because demand and by improvements in the production technology, companies began to improve the quality of the toys over time. Now these have opening and moving parts, plastic windows, jewelled headlights, tire assemblies, interiors and anything one can ask for. They are surely the collector’s delight.

While the market of the diecast models spread internationally, there was a great change in the all over manufacturing ideas of these replica cars. While the car market began to spread unprecedentedly, the model cars also underwent mammoth change in their design concepts. The diecast application made the cars looking even more real-life. Soon, the replicas of champion sports car flooded market to match an overwhelming demand. As the years have passed, now the model cars have come up with amazing get ups and speed. These cars now run on battery, spring, and electric. Some miniatures are also equipped with solar power concepts to save energy.
