Your phone displays its signal strength as a series of bars on your screen. And we have all experienced the frustration that accompanies a loss of signal. All of our mobile phones depend on good network coverage to keep us all in touch. Some networks provide more consistent coverage than others, although things are improving all the time.
The strength or quality of your signal depends on the strength of your mobile phone network coverage. Usually, the closer you are to a mobile phone tower belonging to your network provider, the stronger the signal you receive will be. However, there are other factors that can affect your signal quality.
If you live in one of the many cities of the UK, then you will undoubtedly have been near to a mobile phone transmitter or base at some point. This should have resulted in a better signal for you. So why is it that even in major cities we experience a complete loss of signal? It cannot be that there are no transmitters in the area. In fact, the most likely culprits are the office blocks and shopping centres that are all around you.
In a bustling city, these interferences tend to come from obstructive buildings, in particular the tall variety. And if these buildings are tightly packed-in around you, then your phone signal has even more work to do to get through to your phone.
Those in rural areas can often lack a proper phone signal, as mobile network coverage tends to be weaker in these areas. Because rural areas are less densely populated, they have suffered a little in the network coverage stakes. Mobile phone providers have concentrated on covering areas where they have the most customers, neglecting countryside coverage in the process.
But things are improving, as the importance of being able to access a good signal while in the countryside is just as important, if not more important, than if you are in the town. The importance of this has been shown with mountain rescue teams being able to save stranded hillwalkers, thanks to the fact that they could get a signal on their phone to call for help.
This is a problem that looks set to be addressed by the up and coming introduction of 4G networks. We have already seen 3G arrive, and there is no question that this has helped push boundaries in mobile coverage terms.
But the real breakthrough will come when 4G hits our shores, ensuring that we all get the perfect signal we all crave, no matter where we are in the country.
