Minnesota’s Metrodome Roof Repairs Hit a Snag

Minnesota Vikings Stadium owners rush to repair roof that collapsed recently as the NFL Season wanes and new events hope to debut.
The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that roof repairs on the city’s famous Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Vikings, could spill into the NFL preseason as more heavy winter snowstorms that initiated the collapse of the roof early this month move in.

“A week of weather similar to the conditions during the snowstorm that led the Metrodome roof to collapse has slowed efforts to find out whether the roof needs to be patched or replaced,” according to the Tribune. It’s critical that the manufacturer gets the word on what the roof repairs will entail because “the manufacturer now has enough material to fix the five torn panels on the roof, but not enough to replace the entire structure.”

A report to determine if the roof can be repaired should come in two weeks, the paper reported. It was already stated that the Metronome most likely wouldn’t be ready in March, when a long list of baseball games were slated to be played there. That could take a bite out of ticket sales and pre-season events.

According to the Tribune, workers looking on the roof recently were forced to get down because of dangerous winter weather, which included snow and subzero windchills. All of the delays are making it very difficult for the workers to meet tight deadlines for the repairing the stadium roof, and each day that passes without a clear idea of what needs to be done, the more likely the delays.

In replacing this roof, though, Ted Mondale, head of the Metrodome Sports Facilities Commission, said safety will be more important than immediacy.

"It's critically important to have an unhurried, unbiased view of this project," he said to the Star Tribune.

In addition to timing, there are many new guidelines and ecological issues to consider when it comes to roof repairs and replacements, which would keep the company from jumping in too quickly with a fast fix. As investments in high-performing, energy efficient commercial roofing solutions continue to rise, many expert manufacturers of roofing materials are recommending that architects and building owners consider participating in the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing's landmark roof rating system –RoofPoint.

What is it? RoofPoint points-based, sustainable roofing guideline system that gives companies a way of evaluating roof system performance over the life cycle of the building considered, delivering a useful measure for what constitutes a sustainable roof in terms of design, construction and operation.

According to said John Geary, vice president of marketing for Firestone Building Products and chairman of the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing’s Board of Directors, other so-called “green” building rating systems examine the building envelope and overall energy footprint only. But RoofPoint takes it to another level, looking at the overall visibility of the various attributes of a sustainable, high- performance, energy-efficient roof. “Using environmentally sound roofing solutions today will have a significant impact on a building’s long-term sustainability and RoofPoint will help building owners select and assess the best roofing systems and be recognized for their green roofing choices,” he said.

RoofPoint works like this: it evaluates low-slope and steep-slope commercial roofing systems in five categories, including: energy management, materials management, water management, durability/life cycle management and roofing innovation. For each functional area guidelines are organized into a series of credits based on critical factors of each primary environmental function. This type of “green” roof system assessment is based on a critical evaluation of each credit to determine if the overall roof design, materials and installation processes meet or exceed RoofPoint requirements. This may be accomplished with a combination of approaches, including energy modeling, life cycle assessment and transportation analysis, as well as other sustainable methods.

It’s not clear what the new Metrodome roof will entail, but stadiums of this size and scope are increasingly jumping on board and imposing these new green standards and there’s a good chance RoofPoint or some other similar rating system will be imposed in the final work.
