We make some pretty fancy rings with meteorite inlays: boonerings.com/extreme.htm The meteorite is literally metal from outer space. When our Solar System was formed around 4.6 billion years ago, clouds of dust and debris formed small clots that grew from their own gravity. They collided and formed larger masses, some the size of basketballs, some the size of cities. As time went on, the larger ones vacuumed up the surrounding worldlets and grew to become the planets we know today. Many others were either pulled into the Sun or from collisions, were thrown out of the Solar System. A glance at the moon shows just how violent it was; collisions were everywhere until things finally calmed down a bit. There is a zone between Jupiter and Mars, where Jupiter’s strong gravity never allowed these little worlds to form larger planets. It’s known today as the asteroid belt. These worlds have the same iron/ nickel core as the Earth, and often have a silicate surface like the Earth. The meteorite that we use in our rings is the core of one of these asteroids.
Some time in relatively recent geological history, (hundreds of thousands or
millions of years ago) one got knocked from its orbit, and it took on a collision
course with Earth. It came to Earth in a massive fireball and landed in Africa near what is now the city of Gibeon in the country of Namibia. We know that it ismeteorite from the uniquely seared outside as the meteorite blasted through our atmosphere and because of the unique combinations of elements it contains. It also has a unique crystalline structure in the metal, called Widmanstatten lines. These are formed by the extremely slow cooling of the molten core of the asteroid over millions of years in space. It cooled only one degree about every thousand years! Metal from Earth won’t have that pattern.
We use this metal and inlay it into a ring crafted from a billet of aerospace grade titanium. The look is unique; futuristic mirror finish titanium next to ancient craggy material. Imagine wearing one on your finger, something that traveled millions of miles to get here and was formed over 4 billion years ago! That’s literally older than dirt!
These types of rings typically sell for thousands of dollars. We have figured out a manufacturing method that allows us to be more efficient in making them. Our pricing is much more reasonable.
