Assuming the role of a bureaucrat of the IAS ranks in India is a much coveted position. It is, a dream come true for the students who secure ranks in the civil services exams and are finally selected to be posted as administrative officers in various sections of the government. The IAS exam is conducted for students from all over the country for posts in the government in different parts of the country.

In this exam pattern, the selection is for administrative officers, police officers, excise and many other allied services. The students are eligible for appearing in the preliminary test after they have passed their graduations in different streams and this open competition is responsible for the large number of students vying for the limited number of posts. The steps for the exams are carried out in three phases, each acting as a qualifying test for the next stage.

After passing through the preliminary test, the candidates can appear in the main exams and with ranks in the main exams, the interview is to be appeared which makes for the final selection. The preliminary exam is conducted during the months of August – September and the main exams are conducted during January. After the results are out by March the interview round is conducted.

From the coming year, the CSAT 2012 is to be conducted replacing the old system of preliminary test. The CSAT is Civil Services Aptitude Test and is aimed at testing the aptitude of the candidates in a refined manner thus bringing out a better evaluation system and doing away with the grading scale system. The mains exam will follow after the CSAT 2012 and the students are required to prepare thorough and extensively for this exam in two subjects that they choose.

A vast course is listed out for the students appearing in the civil services exam and the IAS syllabus 2012 is very extensive. There are many subjects from the arts, commerce and science stream with details of the courses in each subject which would be mentioned in the brochure that would be released in many national newspapers before the dates of the preliminary test. Interested students should keep a watch on the dates but they should start preparations much before the dates are announced.

As these exams require an extensive knowledge base, the interested candidates and those who have been successful should start preparations a couple of years earlier. The standard of the IAS exam is of the toughest quality, not because the questions are difficult, but because the questions are from so extensive areas that for many students knowing everything is not possible.

But for those who have achieved success in these exams and are targeting the CSAT 2012, there has to be knowledge ranging from their own subjects to the current affairs. The preliminary tests are conducted in such a manner that the cream of the candidates are filtered out in the initial part thereby allowing the best brains to compete in the main and finally in the interview rounds.
