Desiring something sweet often leads to artificial sweeteners to avoid calories. Those artificial sweeteners are shown in scientific studies to lead to excessive hunger. Over-exercising to burn more calories leads to more than just sore muscles, including inflamed joints and even weight gain.
So many of us have tried and failed at weight loss after menopause. Heck, many of us have tried and failed at weight loss our whole lives. Menopause feels like it adds to the problem - while we pack on the pounds.
How menopause can affect Insomnia.
You're laying in bed, your partner is sound asleep while you are surfing the channels on the television at four a.m. and you say to yourself "why me?". If you are in the pre-menopause or menopausal stage in life this could very well be you. With your hormone balances all over the scale this could be the cause of insomnia that you are suffering. This could be your life until these hormones are back in balance.
During menopause you have a decrease in two very important hormones called estrogen and progesterone. When these two hormones take a nose dive in your body it makes the body react to some unsettling changes in which it makes it hard to go to sleep at night. Now there could be some other causes to the insomnia that you are facing such as stress, to much caffeine, alcohol or sleep apnea. But if you are in the age range of pre-menopause or menopausal than more than likely your body is having these terrible hormone fluctuations and causing the insomnia issue.
Another issue that makes it hard to go to sleep at or it wakes you up during the night is hot flashes (power surges). Many women are plagued with these which also strike women during pre-menopause or menopause stage of life. The reason for these to occur in women that are in stage of life is that the body has a rush of adrenaline which not only causes the hot flash but also wakes up the mind. While you are awake the adrenaline is rushing through your system and you will not be able to fall back to sleep again until the adrenaline eases off and this energy in your body passes on through. Unfortunately this could take several hours.
What are some suggestions that may help?
First talk to your doctor. Your doctor may want to prescribe a low dose birth control pill or some sort of hormone replacement therapy. These are used to help balance out your estrogen levels. There are some dangers with these so make sure you get all the details first. Other people have tried Acupuncture, yoga, herbal medication, or even gone through sleep studies. Besides menopause causing insomnia there could be a sleep apnea problem in your body. Research has shown that menopause can increase sleep apnea by almost eight times the normal average. Do research on your own, but also talk to your doctor about what he may suggest.
