Many people today enjoy the benefits of memory foam mattresses. They are comfortable to sleep on, and benefit the health of hospital patients and chronically ill or disabled individuals who would otherwise suffer bedsores from lying in an inflexible position on too hard or firm a mattress. They are affordable and durable, as well as marketed in a variety of sizes and at a variety of price ranges.
What many people who enjoy these benefits on a daily basis may not know is how memory foam mattresses are an outgrowth of modern space age technology and research. Memory foam was unknown until approximately 1966. This major ingredient in memory foam mattresses was first developed in research funded by the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The goal was to better the utility of cushions used in high altitude aircraft, which, of course, was later brought to bear in cushions in astronauts space capsules. Few knew then that it would later find widespread use in memory foam mattresses in people's homes.
It was not until the beginning of the decade of the 1980's that NASA allowed this advanced technology to be used for the benefit of everyday people here on earth rather than aloft in the heavens. In the 1990s, there was a popular adoption of the product for use in memory foam mattresses.
Memory foam uses polyurethane as the first step in the manufacturing process. It is then mixed with a number of other chemicals to make it dense and to heighten its viscosity. When used in memory foam mattresses, the heat and weight of a human body lying on it causes the mattress to change its shape to accommodate the natural folds of the body, increasing comfort. The change in shape of memory foam mattresses in this way is not permanent, and when the person gets up, the memory foam mattresses returns to its original shape and condition relatively quickly looking as good as new.
Memory foam mattresses may sometimes sell for a bit more than the older styles, but the consumer is paying for quality, comfort, and health benefits. Memory foam mattresses are very supportive of the human body, while at the same time being very flexible, combining the good qualities of a soft mattress which many find comfortable, with the good qualities of a firm mattress which provides support and solidity.
Memory foam mattresses do come in models which are softer or firmer, to suit different preferences.Often, part of the difference in memory foam mattresses resides in their height.
Memory foam mattresses have been acknowledged by medical personnel as being particularly beneficial to hospital patients and elderly and disabled persons who all may need to remain immobile in their beds for extended periods of time. The use of memory foam mattresses in these circumstances eases the pressure over the sleeping or immobile person's bones which would otherwise cause pressure sores on too firm a mattress.
