During the feudal system commoners were bound to obey the feudal lords. Due to unfriendly laws of land they had to do whatever ordered by lords and couldn’t change the job or move somewhere else. They were allowed to move only in festive occasions to gather the valuable items of their need. Forced to live in miserable conditions, for them clothing was merely a need. Fashionable attire was something those people could never achieve. Neither they could afford such costumes nor do they even think of it.

Nobles had all the right of the world when it comes to luxury. From lavish palace to stylish medieval renaissance costumes and jewelries to sapid cuisines they enjoy the comfort of luxury while poor were debarred of such leisure. Nobles cloud think of stylish and extravagant renaissance dresses because they had money to buy and let tailors to sew exquisite clothing for them. On the other hand costumes of peasants and workers were made by themselves or exchanged in trade with other valuable items. Actually during Middle Ages people lived in pyramid society with head of the state in top and people of lower strata like peasants at the bottom.

Peasants during those times generally wore coarse clothing of wool along with clothes made of linen as undergarment. This community almost carried the same dressing style. By the time of early middle Ages, lower class people had replaced loose, voluminous cloak and tunics by fitted clothing. Tunics were worn by women that could be turned into a dress which was fitted by lace to tuck it on upper part of body. Some men also started to wear renaissance shirts and breeches under tunics and some wore leggings. Aside from wool and linen, fabrics of cotton and shipskin were also part of their costumes.

Royals were the people who define the style of that era. They created fashion statement. Different rulers had unique sense of styling and others just envied them. Beautiful voluminous clothes were embellished with alluring embroideries, graceful laces and expensive stones and metals. Wimples, metal hairnets and veils were worn by some women during late medieval period. Countries who were indulged in war also introduced new kind of fabric to conquer state which resulted in change in the cloth of fabric but fashion almost remained same. Fabrics worn by royals and nobles are damask, brocade, silk and velvet.

There was other group of people also, who didn’t obey the law of land. Those people were unemployed, harassed, distressed of miserable living condition which led them to take the path of piracy. Some of them were forced to take piracy because of above suggested reasons and some were really cruel and rebellious in nature who only wanted to take pleasure of luxury. As they used to gather items of their need by hijacking others’ ship, they don’t have any particular sense of styling but the captain of the ship do follow some common trend in costumes like pirate shirt, pant, bandana, sash and a hat. Pirate clothing were part of loot and the main aim of pirate’s clothes was to look dreadful enough to fright others.

This may be sound difficult to sallow for modern women but it is the fact that clothing of medieval period was comfortable. Men and women wore same kind of clothes, only the length of women’s was longer.
