The term "Shangri-La" has always been equated with immortality in pop culture. Disregarding the popular chain of hotels normally associated with it, Shangri-la for those who understand better is, in fact, that ultimate place which holds the legendary Fountain of Youth, enabling one to maintain his or her youthful beauty and appearance.
When reality bites, however, science or probably alchemy still has a long way to go before it can treat us with such miraculous brew. So for now, we settle for that other Shangri-La which can be found in medical spas.
However, just what are these facilities and why have they suddenly sprouted all over the country, like some sort of invading plant?
A medical integrates the features of a medical clinic and a day spa with a medical license, where professional doctors treat patients. Medical spas offer a variety of services like cosmetic and plastic surgery, liposuction, and specialized services such as hydration therapy, hair removal and abdominoplasty.
What differentiates spas from medical centers is that the former is a place where patients can find relaxation, which is a disparity from the sterile and desolate hallways of a hospital. Also, medical spas provide wellness services that cater to the body's needs including specialties such as hydration therapy and HGC consultation. Others even have services for relaxation like a massage and relaxation treatments.
As for the difference of medical spa from the usual ones, the former are owned and ran by state-licensed doctors. All procedures, no matter how simple or complex, is always looked after by a doctor or specialized surgeon, with the assistance of a medical team. This medical team can be nurses, nursing practitioners, estheticians and medical technicians.
At present, there is still no national standard for medical spas, therefore leaving the regulation and decision up to individual states. As a result, many people are confused as to who can perform medical procedures and what are the licenses and permit necessary.
For instance, some states have no rules regarding laser and light treatments, so technicians with no medical training can perform them. And across the country, some medical spas employ non-med technicians for everything from Botox to laser liposuction.
On top of these concerns, the law is also unclear on which treatments should be performed only by medical professionals and which ones can be handled by those without medical training. As such, most customers are advised to first check if the spa in question has staff that have the appropriate training and credentials for the procedures they have on offer.
Vague regulations and sometimes the lack of them, make it hard to control and police unlicensed technicians who are working for medical spas. Add to that the lack of awareness of clients about treatments that should be operated only by licensed medical doctors and not merely by a non-medical technician.
Medical spas offer promising services and excellent experience. However, it's important that clients ensure the credibility of the medical spa itself and the staff. When it is your body and wellness that is at stake, it's just proper to take extra care. Do your homework; research and inquire first.
