The RVM system can help the driver to avoid dangerous situations and collisions with other vehicles when changing lanes. The system uses two radar sensors, mounted on either side of the rear bumper which constantly measure the distance to, and relative speed of, surrounding vehicles
.
When a vehicle is travelling at a speed of more than 60km/h, the Mazda Rear Vehicle Monitoring system will warn the driver with a proximity indicator light situated in the door mirror on the side where either a vehicle is currently in the blind spot. Should the driver use the indicator in the direction of an approaching vehicle, the proximity will then blink rapidly and a beeper will sound to warn the driver. The system will work in almost all weather and can detect all types of vehicles including motorcycles.
Mazda research shows that nearly 5% of all accidents are between vehicles driving in the same direction, and nearly 80% of these are due to lane changing.
