Math is a subject where the more advanced math concepts become very difficult if the students have not mastered these basic fundamental skills. This article shows you the actual mean or concept behind Distributive property or laws. First question comes in our mind is that What is a Distributive Property ? It is an algebra property which is used to multiply a single term and two or more terms inside a set of parentheses. Distributivity is a property of binary operations that generalizes the distributive law from elementary algebra.
The distributive property helps with mental math and should be taught to children as a method to multiply much quicker in their heads. Distributive property is basically a multiplication property.
The mathematical view of this property is :
a(b + c) = ab + ac
To multiply in algebra, you will use the distributive law or property to get the desired answer :
3x(x+4)
= 3x(x) + 3x(4)
=3x2+12x
We can use distributive Property in multiplying a polynomial by a monomial. It can also helps in getting a result after multiplying a binomials.
An example to show the multiplication of two binomial term.
(x + y)(x - 2y)
=(x + y)x + (x - y)(2y)
=x2+xy +2xy - 2y2
=x2 + 3xy – 2y2
If a problem comes with a negative sign before parentheses and not having any value then we can solve this problem in the following manner : The simplest way is to change each positive or negative sign of the terms that were inside the parentheses. Negative signs become positive signs. Similarly, positive signs become negative signs. For example : -( a + 2bc)
can be solve as : -a – 2bc
A variable can also be used before a set of parentheses, we can solve it by distributing it with inside values like just as we distributed a negative sign or a number. Consider the following example.
X (Y + 1) can be written as XY + 1
Distributive law also plays an important role in solving Boolean Algebra problems. The distributive property comes with following statements : A (B + C) = AB + AC and A + (BC) = (A + B) (A + C)
