Matheran is the smallest hill station situated in the Raigad District of Maharashtra and is the smallest in India. Matheran, means “forest on top” and is situated in the Western Ghats at an average altitude of 800 meters above sea level.

Matheran, means “forest on top” and is situated in the Western Ghats at an average altitude of 800 meters above sea level. Britsh discovered and developed the hill station. Matheran was discovered, in the year 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the District Collector of Thane. The place was developed by Lord Elphinstone, the Governor of Bombay, as a summer resort for the British. In 1907, Lord Elphinstone introduced roadways as well as the Mountain Railways which was a light railways line and was worked by an agency called the Matheran Steam Light Tramway Co. Ltd., Bombay to Matheran.
Matheran is around 100 kms away from the industrial capital of India, Mumbai. The place boasts of its panoramic views and breathtaking charm. Another special thing on Matheran is that it has no tarred roads and the path is made of red laterite earth. Matheran is an eco-sensitive region and is one of the few places in the world where vehicles are not allowed, which makes the place different from others. The fresh unpolluted air free of smoke and the beautiful surroundings makes it a most visited tourist destination in west India.
The languages spoken in Matheran are the Marathi, Hindi, and English. The place is flocked with lots of Parsi bungalows. Beautiful old British-style architecture is preserved in Matheran. Matheran is reservoir of rare species of flora and fauna which flaunts the biodiversity of this place. Matheran is also famous for its 38 lookout points, which provides panoramic view of the peaks of Western Ghats as well as its village-dotted plains.

How to Reach:
Air: Mumbai is the nearest airport to Matheran which is about 100 km away from Matheran city. Mumbai is well connected to other major airports in India and abroad. Taxis are available from Mumbai to Matheran and fare is about Rs 2000.
Rail: Neral is the nearest railhead which is about 20 km away from Matheran. It is well connected to other major Indian cities like Pune, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. There are several trains connecting these cities to Neral. Taxis are available from Neral to Matheran costing about Rs 400.
Bus: Matheran is connected to neighboring cities by these public transport bus services. Many tourist deluxe buses from Mumbai and Pune to a nearest point of Matheran, nearly 3 km away, are available.
