The use of the letter “G” in 3G and 4G stands for generation. In mobile technology, “G” covers the major advances of the past 20 years. Although it was not known as such when it first came out, “1G” began in the 1980’s and was used in the first mobile phones. 2G arrived in the 1990’s and provided service in digital format and introduced text messaging. 3G made it possible to carry enhanced, broadband data services such as streaming video and live television, blazing fast internet and multimedia services. 4G goes beyond 3G and offers higher data transfer speeds and enhanced security measures.
There are two major systems of 4G Wireless Networks using 4G technology in the United States today. One is called WiMax and is owned by Sprint Nextel, who began testing the system in 2008. The other system is called Long Term Evolution (LTE) whose majority owner is Verizon. The LTE system, however, will not be widely available until 2012. This leaves Sprint as the only carrier offering 4G cell phone coverage at this time. Other cellular companies claim to have 4G capable phones and they do, but until the LTE system is implemented, their devices will operate only on 3G capable networks.
Sprint’s 4G Wireless Phones’ coverage is expanding rapidly. As of January 2010, Sprint has 4G coverage in 34 cities, the majority of which are located in Texas, where 14 major cities are covered. They intend to have more than 80 cities with 4G coverage by the end of 2010. Another ultimate goal of Sprint’s 4G mobile technology is to reduce blips in transmission when a device moves between areas covered by different networks.
With Sprint, we are looking at the future of mobile technology. 4G technology will be used for home broadband connections which won’t require any cabling to the home. Also, it will be used for accessing the internet on the move without having to be in a Wi-Fi spot. At its core, 4G proposes to gear towards a higher quality of overall service. At the top of the priority list is a focus on better cell phone reception and smooth information exchange.
4G Wireless Networks and 4G Wireless Phones promise to be the fastest mobile wireless communication method ever devised.
