Even for the most cautious of shoppers, marketing schemes are still plenty that trick them into spending money unnecessarily. One example is seasonal sale. Those raiding sales in the mall, believe they can save more money than shopping for regular prices. Others apply for bond to get a loan, which is a scheme they try if they don't have cash. They believe these bond loan forms can help them take advantage of the various discounts.
But on the contrary, these discount signs are nothing but tricks to get you buying even when you don’t need the items. So to avoid signing up for those bond loan forms, you must learn to point out the real discounts from mere marketing tricks. Here are some examples:
The 99, 95, and 9 signs. When you’re faced with the prices $13.99 and $6.95 among others, you instantly think they’re $13 and $6 respectively, instead of rounding them off to the right. There is a psychology behind this and it’s a trick to deprive you of the fact that sometimes, it is not a mark down but simply a true price indicated in 9’s.
The 99 cents store. It may sound like a deal to hoard everything at $.99 but most items sold in such price in fact costs twice than their supermarket counterpart. Get an item for $.99 at the 99 cents store when at some popular supermarket chain it would cost you no more than $.50. If you want deals truly worth 99 cents, go for pint-size packaged foods.
No dollar sign. According to a research by Cornwell University, diners who ordered from a menu with dollars, indicated in words or sign, beside the prices spent less than those who ordered from a menu that showed only numerals as prices. You can say that the presence of the dollar sign makes us think twice about the prices.
Beware of phrases. The sign ‘For a limited time only’ invokes urgency so you think you need to buy the item because if not, you will never have the item in such a great deal again. It’s a disaster when you don’t have a need for that limited priced item.
You should also be cautious of ‘Buy one, get one 50% off’ because they are the same as ‘get everything 25% off’, only the former seems inviting.
So beware of using a bond loan scheme for marketing ploys. Only fill out those bond loan forms for more urgent needs. If you truly want to save on shopping, avoid the tricks mentioned above and seek for real discounts.
