One of the most challenging feats in the field of education has been the entry of a professionally trained pediatrician. Dr. Montessori’s dramatic change of course from medicine to teaching began with her designing a blue print of learning programs for a variety of children ranging from the intellectually disabled to the gifted. Maria strongly felt the most important period of life in an individual was from birth to the age of six because that was when the child’s intelligence was being developed.

Maria Montessori’s approach to education has been a path breaking and pioneering masterpiece in the field of early education. The aim was to provide children with an active learning experience based on the sensory experience. She designed learning materials out of simple things like cloth and wood that were interesting to touch and feel, reality oriented, and aimed at stirring the senses due to their texture or visual appearance. apart from the refinement of a child’s sensory perceptions. Her theory was a run away hit with the children who automatically took a natural pleasure in learning which developed their innate self confidence which was necessary for independence .Dr.

Maria often stressed in her books that it was futile to force children to be quiet actually restricted their ability to learn which actually meant the ability to execute their thoughts into action. It was important for children to be restless, noisy, vibrant and active to get the best out of learning during the formative years of a child. Dr. Montessori is remembered across the world as being a dynamic philosopher who believed in the natural development of the child through the play way method to become self-motivated, independent and life-long learners. Today, there are a number of Montessori schools across India and the world that have incorporated core elements of her model into their curriculum.

The Montessori primary program is designed as a three-year cycle. Much of the material and exercises in the first year help the child achieve a direct, immediate goal but also serve an indirect purpose of laying the foundation for future learning. There is also a social component hidden in the theory. The mixed-age grouping exposes children to those who are older, and younger, than they are. They quickly learn how to behave and what is acceptable from watching the older children.

One of the best ways to internalize knowledge is to explain it to others, and often an older child will help teach certain concepts to a younger child. Unfortunately, many parents withdraw their children from Montessori to have them admitted into formal school at the age 3 but they are robbed of that precious third year– the opportunity to complete the full cycle of activity with the classroom materials and curriculum. Without that third year, the education will be incomplete and the full impact of being in a Montessori will not have ingrained in them. As parents, we should do everything possible to give our children the full Montessori experience in making learning a holistic action.
