After that, cultivation and production increased. Today, the location houses more than 5,000 hectares of vineyards and more than a hundred wineries. In order for the wine to have the perfect taste, new French oak barrels were introduced to aid the fermentation process. Many aren't aware that the use of barrels actually boosts the flavour of the final product. It's due to the kind of wood used for the barrel that wine gets that specific bite that it is known for.

Margaret River wineries make both red and white varieties. In 2010, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot were the top three in terms of volume produced. Chardonnay, Semillion, and Sauvignon Blanc rounded out the list of the top six varieties made.
