One of the best innovations of the 20th century is the Internet. How can it not be when you can do and find almost everything in this new medium? In fact, the term revolution is truly the most appropriate way to describe this discovery. At present, more than 50% of the entire world’s population is using the Internet for various reasons: to keep in touch with long-lost friends, buy and sell products, market goods and services, listen to music, watch movies, download free online games, the options are limitless! But above all, the advantage of the Internet can be best seen in education.
Thanks to technology, getting to the Internet is now more affordable and much easier than it was when things first started. More and more households are getting Internet connections, which makes the ease of communication and spread of information valuable tools for education.
Through the Internet, students are able to connect not only to their peers, but to their teachers as well through E-mail or chat services. They are able to share information and talk about their subjects or homework outside the classroom. Also, teachers can easily contact their students’ parents of guardians to talk about their issues in class.
The Internet has also made it easier to do project requirements in school. Students will be able to find all the resources and materials they need from the endless list of reference sites in the net. Before, students still have to go to the library and do research by going through endless stacks of books. Now, with the Internet, all they have to do is to use search engines to find the information they’re looking for. They can easily finish their homework as long as they know how to use the Internet.
Encyclopedias are one of the most essential educational materials; however, having to get them from the library can be a hassle. Now, reference encyclopedias can be accessed online. This is a huge advantage for children who only use English as a second language. With this modern technology, learning is a lot more enjoyable for children. They are able to learn more and retain knowledge through the use of videos and pictures.
News websites on the web are updated regularly. So if you have no time to read the newspaper in the morning or watch the news on TV, you can still catch up with the current affairs with only a few clicks of the mouse. Speeches, biographies, memoirs and other historical accounts are also available in complete and detailed versions.
The Internet has also enabled distance education or online learning. With this program, students are able to take up short-term courses online. Not only that, they can even get a degree by studying online. This innovative method of learning has been proven to be effective. Now, more people, like single parents or those financially troubled people, are able to finish their studies and get their degrees.
Having been discussed the benefits of the Internet to education, students should be given access to it for deeper understanding and knowledge. However, they should also be guided accordingly. Help them stray away from unwanted or unethical information and sites.
