In statistics mainly we calculate three terms or we can say three terms need to be understood in order to understand statistics properly.
1. Mean: the mean is the average of all the items present in the given list of data. Mean for ungroup(individual) data of the arithmetic mean is denoted byand it is given by a formula:
2. Median: it is defined as the middle term of the list, if number of items is odd then middle term and if even then the average of middle two terms.
3. Mode: it is the term in which we take the number of repeated items in the list
Let’s take an example and calculate mean, median and mode for it.
1, 2, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 8, 9.
In this set total number of items are 9 i.e. odd numbers are present. Firstly we calculate its mean, for this we have to take its average I.e.
ð (1+2+4+3+6+5+7+8+9)/9
ð 45/9,
ð 5
Now, let’s calculate median, for calculating median we have to arrange the terms of list in ascending order, and then the middle term is median, in case of odd numbers and sum of middle two terms divided by 2 in case of even numbers. Here, number of terms is odd so first arrange them in ascending order i.e.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Now the middle term is 5 so median= ‘5’.
Mode is the term in which one or more than one term repeats in the series. In the given series of numbers there is no such number so in this case there is no mode. There is a term named range, it is the difference between largest and smallest number in the list. Here range = largest value- smallest value,
Range = 9 – 1 = 8.
So in this question,
mean= 5,
Median= 5
Mode= no number,
Range= 8
