A candy jar is defined as an unyielding, cylindrical vessel with an expanse mouth or aperture. Jars are usually made of ceramic, glass or even plastic. They are used not only for storing candy of many shapes and sizes, but also as containers for food, fruit, dried herbs and even make up and medical items.

The lid, or closure placed to the opening of a jar can come in the forms on screw on caps, cork stoppers or other lids with hinges.

Candy jars are usually recycled, in fact, in some countries, there is a legal authorization deposit which is given after a customer surrenders the empty jars back to the manufacturers. Some recyclers have posed concerns on the potential dregs from the viscous contents.

Jars are also known as cookie jars, and have been utilized in England since the later part of the 18th century. Back then, glass jars were usually fashioned from glass and encased at the top with lids made from metal. When the Great Depression Era occurred in 1929, for some strange reason, glass jars rose in popularity. These Depression jars were also made of glass and come with metal lids. In the 30s, candy jars switched materials to ceramics and were rendered with beautiful floral and leaf motifs.

Candy jars are very beautiful to look at, especially when they are filled with delicious multi colored candy. Making unique jars is not at all difficult; it is a wonderful way to let someone know how much you mean to them by gifting a filled candy jar made by your own hands.

To make your own candy jar, you will need empty transparent jars, candy (M&Ms are wonderful decorative additions), fabric, glue, stickers, paint, markers and glitter.

Please make sure that the candy jar you intend to use has been thoroughly cleaned, sanitized and fully aerated. Also ensure that there is no debris trapped in there.

Embellish the exterior of the candy jar suing glitter, paint, markers or stickers. You can also buy colorful beads and stick them sparingly around the jar's body or lid. Depending on how much paint you apply, drying times can vary. Just make sure it is completely dry before the next step starts. Avoid decorating inside the jar as it might contaminate the candy you place inside.

The lid of the jar can be embellished using a flurry of rainbow colors. Or you can cut strips of fabric and fashion a hat out of the lid, and on the body, paint a face complete with eyes, nose and mouth. Place strips of wool on the sides to give the illusion of hair.

Once this is completed, start filling your jar with candy, combined with dried fruit or on its own.

Another idea is to decorate your candy jar in accordance to certain holidays. For Halloween, your candy jar can become a ghoul filled with red and black candy. For Christmas, the glass jar is now striped green, red and white.

Make your own unique glass jars and send along to family and friends, but keep one or two for yourself.
