Maintenance Tasks for Your Lawn Mower

There are routine tasks that will keep your lawn mower running smoother. First, pull and clean the spark plug. The spark plug is what provides an electric spark to ignite the fuel in the engine. Without that ignition, the engine will not turnover and give you power. Use a spark plug wrench to loosen the plug and remove it manually. Use a bit of fine sandpaper to remove any contamination from both ends of the spark plug. Any build up will prevent proper ignition.
Performing routine maintenance on your mower is easier when you use a lawn mower jack. Do not replace the plug until after you sharpen the blades.

The next step is to check the oil, fuel, and fuel line. Pull the oil stick out of the tank and check the levels. All dipsticks have markings that show the ideal level of oil. If your oil is low, add a bit. If you have too much oil, you need to drain some off. Use a lawn mower jack for safety. Too much oil will lead to smoking and a dirty air filter. Open up the fuel tank and visually inspect it. Does the tank look clear and the gas in good shape? The fuel line is what feeds the fuel into the engine. Do a visual inspect of it and the fuel filter. Any debris in the line will cause ignition and running problems.

The third step is to check the air filter and clean it. Every mower seems to put the air filter in a different position. Take the screw out of the case and remove the air filter. Do a visual inspection of the filter. If it is very dirty, replace it completely. If there is only a bit of debris, gently tap the filter on a hard surface to loosen the debris. You can also use an air hose to blow the debris out of the filter. However, use caution as the air pressure pose can be too much and tear the filter in some cases. Replace the air filter and put the case back on. Keeping the mower locked in a lawn mower jack will make this entire process safer.

The final task is to sharpening the blade. This is the task where it is essential to have a good lawn mower jack. Take the blade off the mower. Use a whet stone or other sharpening tool to get a good edge n the blade. If the blade is bent or otherwise has damage, replace it.
