Back in 1920 Cecil Kimber founded the MG Car Company which manufactured British sports cars. The best known model was the two-seat open sports car but the company also produced saloons and coupes.
The cars where mainly produced at the MG factory in Abington outside Oxford, a factory which closed down in 1980 although the production of MG cars continued elsewhere at Longbridge and Cowley with models such as Austin Rover’s Metro, Maestro and Montego.
The original MG Car Group went through plenty of mergers and name changes through the years. It was merged with the Austin Motor Company in 1952 creating the British Motor Company and in 1966 it merged with Jaguar forming British Motor Holdings which again merged with Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968. From 1975 the company was called British Leyland and from 1986 British Leyland became part of the Rover Group. BMW took over this company in 1994 but sold the business again in 2000.
The MG badge passed to the MG Rover Group based at Longbridge in Birmingham and in 2005 a Chinese motor company called Nanjing bought the rights to the MG brand. Nanjing is now part of the Chinese state owned Shanghai Automotive Industry Company.
With the Chinese purchase of the MG brand assembly started again at the Birmingham plant in 2007. In the beginning the older MG models such as the MG TF LE500 were assembled at the Longbridge plant, but in spring 2011 a new MG6 saw the light of day marking at new beginning for the former British giant. The new MG6 has received good reviews and new engine sizes are planned for 2012. If you want to check out the state of British car industry yourself, you could visit MG London and take one of their MG models out for a test drive. If their new offerings prove popular this could mark the start of a new era in British car industry.
