As predicted, mobile commerce sales grew at an exponential rate this past year. People are getting more comfortable with mobile technology - and find it much more convenient since many people are on the go. Shopping for Christmas gifts from mobile devices, such as the iPad and the iPhone, is becoming more commonplace due to streamlined mobile websites and user lifestyles. But just how much did mobile commerce rise in the past year? Is this a trend that will continue?

Let's think about it this way; according to Erika Morphy on Forbes.com, the amount of online retail sessions initiated from mobile devices was up by 117.8%, making up 18.3% of all online sessions. Compared to last year, where mobile sessions only made up 8.4% of all online sessions, we can see that this is a massive increase. A lot of this can be explained with the introduction of the iPad and other tablet computers. Although shopping from mobile phones has also increased, the iPad accounted for 7% of all online shopping experiences - which is a whopping number considering that it was released in 2010. Tablet computer use is expected to outnumber that of desktop PC use in the next few years, so we'll keep an eye on this trend.

Actual sales from mobile devices also increased, to make up for 14.4% of total online sales, which is up from 172.9% last year (Forbes.com). At this rate, mobile sales will soon match sales made from desktop computers - and possibly outweigh them. As the trends change, retailers will have to ensure they have mobile sites available that are able to handle the traffic increase. Mobile Internet will also have to go through changes to make it even more secure for users - and to help protect them from viruses. There are certain to be a lot of changes in the upcoming year.

Looking at the statistics, it's easy to see that mobile commerce is swiftly on the rise. With that in mind, you should make sure that you're ready to provide what customers expect. You can contact an e-commerce provider, such as Infigra E-commerce, for more information about m-commerce and how to set up a mobile site for your e-commerce store.
