When non-Hawaiian residents are asked to associate a word with Hawaii, more often than not “luau” is the first word rolling off the tips of their tongues. Appropriately reasoned, luaus have been a part of traditional Hawaiian culture throughout their known history, which dates back to at least the mid-1800's.
The traditional luau began as a lavish feast of Hawaiian delicacies, where it earned its namesake from the popular dish of tender taro leaves, chicken, and coconut milk known as luau. The feast was eaten on the floor amid elaborate arrangements of native flowers, ferns, and leaves, but to the chagrin of non-native visitors, without utensils. Visitors were entertained much in the same way as luaus are presented today, with a display of cultural dances and music representative of each Hawaiian island.
While the typical Hawaiian luau has conformed to the modern standard of dining at a table and utilizing utensils during the feasting, the Maui luau at the Royal Lahaina hotel on Kaanapali Beach manages to recreate that old world hospitality feeling which keeps thousands of visitors coming back each year.
While many a Maui resort presents a traditional luau, the Royal Lahaina hotel recreates the unique experience of having attended a royal Maui luau. You will be summoned by a conch shell trumpet just before sunset to Kaanapali Beach, where you will be greeted with a royal aloha shell Lei.
While you are enjoying a beverage from the open bar, you can take in all the unique cultural experiences of a royal Maui luau. You can even witness the slow roasting of the evening meal's centerpiece, a traditionally prepared pig, in an underground Imu, or spit.
The all-you-can-eat Maui Luau Buffet will beckon you over with traditional Hawaiian fare and delicacies such as baked Mahi-Mahi, Lau Lau, and of course the main dish, Kalua Pau'a, or pig. Alongside these great dishes you can expect to find a variety of Poi, Lomi Lomi Salmon, baked sweet potatoes and an endless variety of local fruits and salad greens.
Throughout the night, expect to be entertained by local Polynesian dancers, musicians, and fine artists which will culminate with a fire dance finale performed by all the participating artists of the evening.
If this display of grandeur and spread of traditional Polynesian fanfare does not overwhelm your senses, you should probably be checking your pulse. There is no more authentic luau than that of the Royal Lahaina on Maui, which will leave you begging for more! Be sure to get your reservations in early, this luau fills quickly!
