Although the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is still undoubtably the biggest comedy festival in Britain, there are now quite a few London festivals that are well worth a look. If you love comedy, it might be an idea to arrange your London visit to coincide with what Londons comedy festivals have to offer.
Greenwich Comedy Festival
Set on the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, this week long comedy feast is one of the best around. Throughout the week, some of the best comedians around will be performing inside a traditional big top, creating a fantastic experience for comedy fans. Outside the big top you can find some smaller marquees and venues where you can hear cabaret, live music, and free comedy performances. Entry to the festival is free, although performances in the big top are priced separately. At this years festival, you can see top comedians such as Tim Minchin, Adam Buxton, Stephen K Amos, and Phill Jupitus.
The Camden Fringe
The Camden Fringe happens simultaneously with the Edinburgh equivalent, a bold move that has paid off handsomely for the promoters. In just seven years, it has gone from being a small scale affair to a massive behemoth of an arts festival, taking place in 24 venues across the entire borough of Camden. While it does not quite have the cache of the Edinburgh equivalent, it more than makes up for it with variety and innovation. It has built a reputation as a launch pad for some of the biggest names in comedy, so if you want to see the stars of the future before they become popular and expensive, then the Camden Fringe could well be the comedy festival for you.
Ealing Comedy In The Park
This outdoor festival, which takes place every year over five days in the London suburb of Ealing, has become one of the capitals favourite comedy events since its inception. Highlights of the 2011 festival included Terry Alderton and Sean Lock. As well as the big name crowd pullers, the festival also gives some great exposure to some of the future stars of the UK comedy scene. Tickets are very reasonably priced as well, so if you want to enjoy great comedy on a tight budget, then you might want to check this festival out.
